What Does “Mix Ratio” Actually Mean?
An epoxy mix ratio is the proportion of resin to hardener that must be combined for the two-part system to fully cross-link and cure. The numbers are read as “parts resin : parts hardener.” So 2:1 means two parts resin for every one part hardener; 1:1 means equal amounts.

Volume vs. Weight: Which Matters?
Always check whether the manufacturer cites the ratio by volume or by weight — they are not interchangeable unless resin and hardener densities are identical (they usually aren’t). 1:1 tabletop epoxies are engineered with equal densities so you can rely on equal-volume pumps. For 4:1 or 5:1 professional systems, measure by weight on a digital scale for accuracy. When a brand gives both, use the weight figure.
How to Measure Correctly
- Read the TDS — confirm volume vs weight and the exact ratio before mixing.
- Tare your cup or container on a digital scale (grams).
- Add the resin first in the correct proportion, then zero the scale again.
- Add the hardener to hit the exact target weight.
- Mix thoroughly — scrape the sides and bottom for a full 2-3 minutes; unmixed streaks never cure.
What Happens If You Get It Wrong?
- Too much hardener → sticky, tacky, or rubbery surface that may never cure; the excess attacks the polymer network.
- Too little hardener → soft, gummy, weak resin that stays tacky and won’t reach full hardness or strength.
- Under-mixing → soft patches and streaks of uncured resin, even at the correct ratio.
- Wrong measurement method (volume when weight was required) → effectively the same as the wrong ratio.
Temperature, Depth & Exotherm
Even at a perfect ratio, resin cures via an exothermic reaction that speeds up in larger pours and warmer rooms. Never exceed the manufacturer’s max pour depth — a deep pour of a tabletop-only epoxy can overheat, bubble, or crack. When casting thick sections, use a deep-pour formula and pour in layers.
